The video makes the negative value of sun beds, or lamps clear, we can look at the different types of UV rays and their effect.
An ample number of coronavirus “cures” have been publicised, from drinking pure alcohol, to disinfectant, or cow urine. They are not going to work and the most likely outcome is further damage, or worse.
The same applies to another readily available option which has been in the news, UV rays. Apart from well known press conferences, this appears to be one of the more prominent and sustained suggestions online.
We must be clear, no amount of sunbed, or sunlamp use is going to make a difference to coronavirus infections but can fry your skin.
The Practical Reality
Our sun emits three UV types, UVA, UVB and UVC. The first two are those your skin normally absorbs from the sun, or sunbeds, whilst the third, UVC, is almost all filtered from the sun’s rays by our atmosphere.
This is just as well, bearing in mind how damaging UVC is. A part of the spectrum which is particularly good at destroying genetic material.
UVC irradiation is used in medical facilities, to kill virus particles on surfaces. Even then, the technician needs to wear a full UV protective face shield, special gloves and other protective clothing.
The UVC rays kill, or deactivate microorganisms by destroying their nucleic acids and warping their DNA. If the user was not protected, the same thing would happen to their genetic material, on the surface and below.
UV Rays & Skin Cancer
Trying a cure which is pointless and likely to leave you looking older is bad enough but the other UV issue has not gone away. UV rays are the primary cause of skin cancers, with concentrated use, such as sun beds, a greater danger.
UV rays may be good for helping to clean hospitals, spending a limited time in the sun has medical and psychological benefits but the parallels end there.
Whilst skin cancer treatment is a key part of our work, we want people to avoid this. Please do not take any notice of the suggestions on coronavirus cures and please stay safe, the best move until real cures are available.
