The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) are offering online, interactive dermatology courses for community pharmacists.
Through the BAD’s educational arm, the British College of Dermatology, six modules are available. They were created with the assistance of an experienced pharmacist, who has a particular interest in skin conditions.
There is a moderate charge to cover costs, although the prime aim of the courses is to better equip pharmacists for the vital role they play.
They are often the first port of call for those with skin issues, who are seeking advice, or treatment. Pharmacists also play a part in the early detection of serious conditions and in encouraging people to seek support.
Course Content
Each module includes case studies and advice on making skin examinations, along with logical next steps for varying conditions:
Managing Acne – A common problem, where guidance is often sought from a pharmacist. Information is provided on causes, development of lesions, treatment options, lifestyle factors and the risk of scarring.
Atopic Eczema – The module covers causes, symptoms and the impact atopic eczema can have on life. Effective management strategies are considered, including the use of topical treatments available from pharmacies.
Psoriasis Care – The different forms of what can be a complex condition are explored. Causes and symptoms will be covered, along with first stage treatment, or management and the assistance available in secondary care.
Skin Examinations – Pharmacists can offer more by understanding the condition their patients have. Through appropriate physical examination, asking the right questions and appreciating the responsible next steps.
Skin Infections – Covering prevalent bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, such as impetigo, tinea, or candida. Helping pharmacists to offer the right advice to their patients and treatment where appropriate.
Sun Safety – A thorough explanation of how UV radiation operates and the effect on our skin. With a focus on preventing damage from the sun, along with offering treatment for sunburn and advice on other UV related issues.
Primary Objectives
Through interactive learning, pharmacists can gain insight to confidently assist and educate patients. Broadening their knowledge on a range of skin conditions, from infected insect bites, to shingles.
A pharmacist’s role in early detection is emphasised, particularly for inflammatory skin conditions and skin cancer. They will be armed with useful information and tools to assist with decision making.
This may lead to immediate treatment, referral to a medical dermatologist, or both. Through decisions based on knowledge, which are available in an easily accessed environment, often without waiting for an appointment.
