The video is a little technical but the core point raised may prove useful to those who suffer from vitiligo.
That house dust mites (HDM) could be problematic for some of us is well understood. They can cause allergic reactions, or exacerbate asthma, links to other skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis have been established.
Research highlighted in the video looked at the ability of HDM to contribute to melanocyte loss and flare ups of vitiligo. This would need to be confirmed by controlled trials but this study does identify the likely mechanics of the process.
Actions To Consider
To suggest that all vitiligo sufferers should take immediate action against HDM would be preemptive. The link is not fully proven and as with other skin conditions, time may show that a percentage of patients are affected but not others.
We still felt that making people aware of the research was worthwhile, along with actions which can reduce HDM exposure should they wish to try them:
- Add allergen proof covers for pillows, mattresses and duvets. They prevent HDM colonisation, or their movement towards you.
- Choose bedding which can be washed at higher temperatures (ideally 60 degrees centigrade) and wash bedding at least weekly.
- Vacuum regularly, with a high filtration vacuum cleaner. Dust all surfaces, using a damp cloth to reduce airborne particles.
- Keep internal humidity below 50% if possible, with a dehumidifier, or air conditioner. HDM thrive in more humid conditions.
Beyond regular activity, there are longer term thoughts. Swapping carpets for a hard, washable surface can make a difference, choosing easily washable curtains, decluttering to remove dust collecting surfaces.
A Balanced View
Vitiligo is primarily an immune system issue, along with being a variable, individual condition. The best source of support is an experienced consultant dermatologist, who can understand your needs.
We are not suggesting that reducing house dust mites will cure vitiligo, or act as an equivalent of vitiligo treatment tailored to each patient.
Vitiligo is a quite personal condition, in a medical sense and due to the visible differences this can bring to our skin. Careful analysis is needed, of the effects on your life and a range of possible triggers, including other medical conditions.
That a common organism could be part of the equation for some patients is still worth thought, with control methods understood.
