There can be times when an injury warrants attention from a specialist dermatologist but for the minor scrapes of childhood, good practice should help.
Treating the whole family has always been part of Skin Care Network’s wish. With around 23% of the Hertfordshire population aged 18, or under, paediatric dermatology is an essential part of our service.
Our consultant dermatologists help with a range of childhood issues, from common rashes, to infectious diseases, eczema, allergies, acne and more serious conditions.
Whilst parents will be equally involved and should be part of consultation, a child centred approach helps. Children can be quite concerned by skin conditions and the changes they bring to life.
In many cases, the issue is short lived but in others, friendship, activities, sleep patterns, or education can be affected. Even from quite a young age, children may also be embarrassed by a skin condition.
We appreciate the programs Hertfordshire education services run, yet try to add to these with careful advice. A good dermatologist should show sensitivity and help to build confidence for the future, by creating positive steps.
Diagnosis & Treatment
Alongside being carefully managed, diagnosis for children should be as thorough as at any age. They will be seen by a consultant dermatologist who has in depth knowledge and is used to working with children.
How they feel about their care, condition and possible treatment is important, alongside making choices which fit with this.
Modern technology such as digital confocal microscopy can be used instead of a surgical biopsy. Lasers can replace more invasive treatment options, topical, or oral medication may be better than injections.
Treatment will naturally depend on individual needs. Whether the condition is part of childhood, sudden onset through viral, or allergic causes, or congenital, a personal treatment plan can be discussed and put into action.
Ongoing Support
The future matters at any age, although for children, this is the driver of care. Treatment decisions need to be about looking forward, not least if a condition could bring medium, or longer term effects.
Dermatology has advanced so much in recent years and being unable to cure, or manage most conditions is a rarity. The key can be early, accurate diagnosis, which removes concerns on the unknown and brings effective treatment.
Please be assured that the majority of children we see are suffering from transient issues. Good treatment helps and they are soon back to normal, although specialist support is available for as long as you require.
We are here to help if a more serious condition is diagnosed, from autoimmune diseases, to psoriasis. Our clinic is well equipped and staffed by people who understand that children have different needs.
