Avoiding an epidemic isn’t a bad idea. Most people wouldn’t fly into a country with a dangerous infection on the loose unless they had no choice.
Taking the same care at home can seem less logical, even though one condition has grown rapidly in the UK. Almost 1 in 4 of all cancers diagnosed are skin cancer, with the most dangerous form, melanoma, heading toward 20,000 cases a year.
Using sunscreen and wearing clothing which gives protection is the equivalent of not taking that flight. The trouble is that 4 out of 5 adults fail to protect their skin, including those who insist their children do so.
Good parenting shouldn’t be derided, helping young people avoid too much sun is important. We should simply recognise that skin cancer does not have an age barrier, almost none of us are immune.
Who Gets Skin Cancer
Genetic tendencies and as recent research confirms, many moles, reddish hair, or pale skin raise the risk of skin cancer, not least melanoma.
If you are in that group and have high sun exposure, regular skin checks with a dermatologist are a wise move. The key point is still not to assume that because you are darker skinned and tan easily, you are safe.
Where you have had a skin cancer of any form in the past, there’s a greater chance you will see another. Certain health issues, such as immune system suppression, can contribute to a higher incidence.
Regardless of all the above, people of all skin types get skin cancer, including black, or ultra healthy skin. Those who have grown up, or lived long term in a sunny environment are not protected, the opposite may well apply.
Take The Time To Protect
Life is busy for many people, additional activity of any sort uses time but sun protection really is a valuable use of a few minutes. This can also save you far more time and inconvenience in the future.
Applying good quality sunscreen, covering core body areas, sticking on a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses will not take long. They can also be protective in other ways and with a little thought, could become a fashion statement.
They will certainly help with appearance, apart from creating skin cancer, too much sun exposure is a guaranteed way to age your skin.
