Incorrect, particularly home based dermatology procedures can leave you with a worse cosmetic outcome than you started with.
Scarring from mole removal at home is far from rare. Unsurprising when ideas online include, scissors, industrial tape, unsuitable skin freezing, or laser like devices, we even saw a suggestion for a hammer and chisel.
Neither are outcomes guaranteed from apparently “safer” methods, mole removal creams available in shops and online can cause thick scars. Having to put up with and pay for cosmetic surgery is not uncommon.
Even where scarring is avoided, failing to remove all the mole can leave a permanent blemish and most methods bring a risk of infection.
Sanitisation, preparation and after care will not be to medical levels. An infection can delay healing, make the chance of scarring even higher and in some cases, could lead to other unwanted conditions.
The health risks will also be greater for a proportion of people, when issues a consultant dermatologist would have seen are missed.
Moles & Skin Cancer
Removing a mole, or any similar lesion yourself stops this being examined. The majority will be benign but there is a possibility that a mole is a pointer to skin cancer, perhaps the most serious form, melanoma.
A specialist could identify this issue visually, or use equipment such as a confocal laser microscope to analyse a lesion. Where helpful, the tissue can be sent to a dermatology lab for scientific analysis.
Getting rid of a mole by any home method does not remove the skin cancer. Cancerous cells are likely to remain in deeper layers and could then spread to other parts of your body, including vital organs.
Professional diagnosis and treatment can see the cancer entirely removed, rather than becoming a hidden issue which gradually worsens.
Not A DIY Field
We understand that the coronavirus pandemic has led all of us to be at home more and do more for ourselves. From a rekindled interest in decorating, to new hobbies, home haircuts, or different approaches to communication.
Just bear in mind that medical treatment of most forms and particularly removing lesions from your skin is not suited to DIY. Professional support makes as much sense as before the pandemic began.
Venturing out to visit a dermatologist is not quite as easy but good specialists are offering teledermatology appointments. They are remarkably effective and safe clinic visits can then be arranged, if there is a need for further diagnosis, or treatment.
An appointment can bring peace of mind, support your health in wider ways and above all, prevent unwanted consequences.
